With Halloween just days away, I thought I'd share what I've been doing in our home.

Halloween treats don't HAVE to be edible or if they are, they needn't be full of sugar, allergens, additives, colouring, and ingredients we cannot pronounce. Ever since we started celebrating Halloween with my young daughter, I've made a commitment to contributing to the Halloween fun using non-food treats. Furthermore, now with a young son with an anaphylactic allergy, I am even more committed to ensuring kids with allergies don't miss out on the fun of trick-or-treating, even before the Teal Pumpkin Project became a thing.

Here is a quick list of my favourite go-to treats distributed over the years.

- glow sticks (any kind: necklace, crowns, bracelets, etc that can be worn while trick or treating - perfect as a fun safety feature too)
- party horns (we/our entire neighbourhood could tell by the sounds of it, who had passed by our house)
- stickers
- temporary tattoos
- playdoh
- finger puppets
- toy jewelry (bracelets, necklaces, etc)
- treat bag of beads and short piece of yarn to make their own bracelet
- stamps
- hair accessories
- City of Ottawa Swim/Skate passes
- stationary of all kinds (pens, pencils, erasers, notepads, etc)
- LED finger lights (love these!)
- fun toothbrushes or floss (yup, I've done it!)
- playing cards or flash cards
- figurines
- mini bouncy balls

Most of the treats above can be easily found at a toy store, Walmart or dollar store near you.

The way I figure it, kids will be inundated w/ treats of the candy variety from the majority of sources they come in contact with. Why inundate them with more? They may, in fact be thrilled by the novelty of something different! So far, my treats have been accepted with warm welcomes especially from the younger trick or treaters (and their parents) and our house has yet to be egged!

What about edible options? Not to fear...bite-sized dark chocolates or lightly salted Harvest Snap Snapea Crisps (sold as a box of individual sized portions at Costco warehouses) are on my approved list too and may be preferred for the older teens who MAY (or may not) be too old to appreciate some of my treats above.

And, if you're wondering if I let my kids have the candy they collect? At age 2+ I told my daughter she could have 1. We simultaneously offered her one candy or a clementine. Much to my surprise, she chose the clementine. At age 3, I told her she could have 3 over 3 days. She lost interest/forgot all about it after 1 and actually preferred to play w/ the toys and glow sticks she received instead. At age 4, I told her she could have 4 over four days. She picked 4, had 1 per day until day 2 then forgot all about it. After she picks her choices, the rest goes to a shelter or to daddy's staff kitchen candy bowl. This is in no way ideal or even wanted by all families but it works (so far) for ours. Sugar is sweet but good health is even sweeter!

Driving Directions

1129 Carling: Take the Queensway to the Parkdale exit. Head South up Parkdale avenue to Carling avenue. Turn right onto Carling avenue drive 2 short blocks to Holland avenue.

The Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre (2260 Walkley Rd.): Take the Queensway to Saint Laurent Blvd exit 115. Turn right on Saint Laurent Blvd. Turn left onto Walkley Rd. E.

Parking Suggestions

1129 Carling: There is a pay parking lot located on the North-East corner of the intersection of Carling and Holland avenues. From this lot head West half a block up Carling, the OIHC will be on the right.

2260 Walkley Rd: There is plenty of free parking and is wheel chair accessible.

Please Note: If you choose to seek free parking on neighbouring side streets, please add 20 minutes to your commute time as it is time-consuming to find a spot.

Bus Routes

The OIHC is conveniently located on several OC Transpo bus routes: The 85, 86, 101 & 176 all stop very near the clinic. Take the Carling & Holland stop and head West half a block up Carling, the OIHC will be on the right.

For the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre OC Transpo buses: 106, 112, 114 & 148 can be taken.
